The Evolution of the Rugby Shirt
11th April 2011The evolution of the rugby kit
The modern rugby kit we see today is a scientifically designed with the modern game in mind. As rugby has become faster, more competitive, more technical, more tactical and much more powerful, the classic rugby jersey has evolved into something very different.
The game of rugby dates back to the early 19th century, so the improvement in kit design is perfectly natural. However for a very long time, perhaps around 200 years, rugby kits were made out of cotton and were quite loose fitting.
A loose fitting cotton rugby shirt gave defending rugby teams something to grab on to. As an attacking rugby player you want to make it as difficult as possible to be stopped. Essentially these loose fitting cotton rugby shirts gave the defending side an advantage which would remain until the development of synthetic fibres, specifically polyester.
For English rugby fans there can be no doubt that 2003 was a very special year. The squad had immense experience and talent with players such as Martin Johnson, Jonny Wilkinson, Matt Dawson and Neil Back, to name but some. Head coach, Clive Woodward brought a fresh and scientific approach to English rugby which ultimately led to success in the 2003 world cup final in Sydney.
That same year the England Rugby shirt underwent a radical change which would have suited Clive Woodward’s philosophy of having the best coaches, the best facilities, the best player support and now the best rugby kits.
The 2003 England rugby kit was tight fitting, made from a mixture of cotton and polyester, featured better sweat removal, better comfort and gripper print to help in wet conditions and scrimmaging.
It is a fitting testimony that ever since the 2003 Rugby World cup, which was one of the finest competitive tournaments ever seen, all professional clubs and international rugby teams have adopted this approach.
